Web Design
Well folks, after several years, I am trying finally to get out of the business of doing web designs. Therefore I will not
be available for any new projects. Sorry, music and dissertation must come first!!
Sites and Descriptions
- Paultools
Latest version - 1.3a - May 2005
The PaulTools are an extensive and versatile set of web editing tools that I
developed over the
course of a year. While they allow a user to exercise great control over the unique page content of a web site, they are
nevertheless absurdly easy and intuitive to use, and require only a rudimentary knowledge of HTML.
Significant help along the way was rendered by Josh Rutner, who
patiently tested out
the alpha and beta versions on his site. Josh also offered invaluable advice and support along the way.
Also, Robert Wood provided some valuable insight into mySQL queries while the PaulTools were in beta development.
The full Paultools are currently running on three sites I administer. A customized version runs on a
fourth site (the Genesee Arts site).
The basic tool set includes:
- Picture upload/management; organization of pictures by category;
- Blog management (with comments!);
- Links page management;
- Events management;
- Ability to customize unique page content on pages, such as biographies or projects;
- Guestbook management;
- Basic HTML reference;
- Authorization system for managing access control to the backend;
- Webmail installation (third-party software).
The PaulTools are designed so that they can be plugged into a new website in a matter of hours. They
can be installed on existing web sites also, though that may take a day or two.
You can see a snapshot of the backend below.
- http://www.rochester.edu/College/ENG/plutzik
Went online January 2005
This is the web site for the Plutzik Reading Series at the University
of Rochester.
- http://www.geneseearts.org
Went online 2 July 2002; revisions June 2003, summer 2003
Redesigning the Genesee Arts site required solid link organization,
since the organization has three "divisions" and one "umbrella
organization". Good communication with the staff made a fast production schedule possible.
In June 2003, this site was given an extensive update. Using a novel backend system,
the staff can update the Genesee Arts class listing and calendar events themselves. The class updater
has been especially useful for people wishing to take classes at the center.
Further work on the site is being done at during summer 2003, and will include a complete database
for managing members, donations, and a mailing list.
- http://www.joshrutner.com
Went online 10 November 2002; crashed 4 March 2003; totally repaired by 24 May 2003
This site is for a very talented local saxophonist. It includes press clippings, audio
files, and runs PaulTools.. The server on which this
site resided crashed in March 2003 and we lost everything but the stuff Google had cached and the base
code for the PaulBlog (predecessor to PaulTools). In a few weeks we had brought everything back up though.
- http://www.philadelphiamodernopera.org (memorial jpg below)
Went online in February 2002; offline August 2002
This is a very simple site for a new non-profit organization that
is attempting to produce modern opera in Philadelphia. Done on a
razor-thin budget. The code and layout is clean and colorful.
Unfortunately this site had to be taken down because of staff irregularities. It may be resurrected one of these days
though.
- http://www.publickmusick.org
Went online in June 2001, revised January 2003, my version went offline in 2004.
The Publick Musick is a non-profit baroque music ensemble in
Rochester. While their site had to be done in a hurry, it implements a mailing list and a contact page using
mySQL and PHP. Online ticket sales are also accomplished through
the site. This is a simple, quick-loading and elegant site.
- http://www.rochester.edu/eastman/gsa
Went online on 1 June 2001.
This is the site for the Graduate Student Association at Eastman.
Despite complex formatting requirements, the contents of the site
are radically modular, and cross-browser compatibility is ensured
via css. The modular design will allow eventual DHTML
implementation, if desired.
The GSA site uses a bulletin board
system for students to post messages; PHP and mySQL function as
the backend. The system is administered through a web-based
utility that requires no knowledge of HTML.
A comprehensive survey of twenty-eight different browsers across
five different platforms showed that only three of them had
problems rendering the page correctly; one of them was Netscape
3.0; another was IE 4.01; the third (netscape 6.01) had problems
only when viewing the site for the first time.
- http://www.laurenradnofsky.com
Went online May 2005.
Uses Paultools; graphics-heavy, kind of splashy!
