Tafelmusik 2007-- NEW!!

These photos were taken in August 2004 in Darmstadt, Germany. I attended the International Vacation Courses for New Music there. It was hardly a vacation, since I was practicing a lot of new music and attending concerts and lectures every afternoon and evening. A typical day would start at 7:30 a.m. and go until about midnight. On the other hand, it was one of the most amazing musical experiences I've ever had. I tried to milk all I could out of it and obsessively took notes for every work I heard during the entire two-week festival. I also wrote obsessively to Christina about my precise whereabouts at each free moment.

While there I took a number of photographs on TMAX 3200 using a 35mm camera and only one 50mm lens. The scans below are of those negatives. I've left in all the scanning artifacts to perserve authenticity. Hee!!

Now that almost all the photos are scanned in, I'm going to put them in categories!

Here's a view of a streetcar from another streetcar. Darmstadt has streetcars everywhere. They are a terrific way of getting around the city. But they are such a pain for all the Hummers and SUVs to get around! Wait...there aren't any Hummers and only a few SUVs in Darmstadt. How do they ever survive over there!!!
This looks like the Farmers' Market, which took place in the center of the city each weekend.
There was a big soccer festival towards the end of my stay in Darmstadt. Here's the view of a large soccer ball right in the middle of Luisenplatz, along with the enormous column that dominates the square.
This was our last dinner at the 2004 music festival. Our chefs brought out roast beef with sparklers on top after telling us that afternoon that there would be something "special" for dinner...
Looks like our main form of diversion: FUSSBALL with the Russian kid!
Here's a landmark whose shape is hard to forget, and stands right near the Luisenplatz...
Looking towards the Hauptbahnhof, footsteps away from the hotel we stayed in.
Luisenplatz at night, with a great deal of Strassenbahn construction!
It appears that Chris Otto is looking at something below from our balcony in this one.
Luisenplatz at night.
This was the last meal that Chris and I shared! Looks like Macdonalds offers veggie burgers in Germany.
Mmm!!! Gemüsemäc!!!
Luisenplatz again. That kiosk tells you how many minutes it will take for each street car line to arrive at the station. Kind of nice, eh?
Construction at the Luisenplatz.
Derek!
Getting ready for the final night party at some weird industrial-like location in the middle of the city!
The final night party is about to occur.
Random people are walking towards the Strassenbahn stop at Luisenplatz.
In Germany, the education system is so good that even alien Teutonic larvae know Einstein's equasion E=Mc^2.
This is the hotel we stayed in at Darmstadt. It looks like a battleship from the outside but it is actually very nice indeed. The rates were great and they didn't mind that I did laundry in the bathtub.
Another shot of that hotel.

This is some Irish bar that we went to one night after a concert. I thought it was kind of depressing but it had its charm.
I don't really know what the impulse was behind this one.
Vince is trying to tune into those vibrations from Sirius.
Eating dinner...The salads were pretty good!
The back end of Lucas, before our rehearsal...Also Phillip is in this one, our cellist.
Wieland and Chris
The same.
Chris is still tuning.
Wieland.
This is the Orangarie where many of the concerts took place! The gardens behind it are really nice.
The front end of the Orangarie (the side that does not face the gardens) is where you entered to get into the concerts.
Another shot of the front end of the Orangarie.
Inside the Orangarie in the very rectangular hall.
Another of the same.
German music stand!
Here's Phillip, our cellist!
Another Phillip photo.
This is a photograph of the American military base, located right next to the Akademie für Tonkunst.
This little piece of graffiti lived on a stone near the Orangarie.
Here's a restauraunt next to the Hauptbahnhof. Taxis lined up outside of it. The fountain out front has a very strange shape.
This building was in the school across the street from the Akademie für Tonkunst. All of the organizational offices and such were here, as well as the cafeteria. There was a little music store there too which was very nice.
The same.
One more picture of the amazing streetcars.
The boys from Manhattan School of Music!
Again!
Again!!!
Once more...
